Question 7
Who would I like to learn from? So, are my current set of teachers ok? Or is there sometimes opportunities to learn from other people, or other teachers, or other students from other places?
Response: I think everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and we should try and take advantage of as many of those as we can, and teachers certainly have a great deal of value. But I have (also) learnt quite a bit from peers, like colleagues, this is at high school, so members of the student group, because they often think of things differently and they come up with different novel ideas. The teacher will give a base piece of information and then we discuss it. For example we would discuss why did so-and-so throughout history do such-and-such, and it’s interesting to hear some of the theories that people come up with which are not in the text book. I think there is a lot of learning that can be done within ones social group and from people in general.
Response: I’ve found I like the teachers that I have at the moment at school especially because I found when I moved to college, just having teachers that were experts in the area that they taught in was really cool. Also learning from students who have done lots more, or if you teach someone else something you’re going to learn it heaps better, you’ll remember it more.
Response: I found that when we had a meeting (earlier in the year) with six sighted and six visually impaired students we actually found that the needs of learning and what we needed were actually quite similar, there wasn’t actually that much difference, it’s just the way we get it might be different.
Response: Something we were talking about upstairs (in a smaller group) before was that everything that helps visually impaired people also helps everyone else. So if people don’t have access to certain types of information, if it comes in different formats or it comes out in text as well that helps everyone else as well not just visually impaired people. I’m in first year University and I’m always on the Uni website downloading lecture notes, looking at videos that play from our lectures and stuff, and I watch them so I can keep up to date with what’s happening.
